"Ou le Tommy est-il reste?" series: one of a series of 12 so-called 'Halt gegen Licht' / 'Hold to Light' propaganda cards made by the Germans for the French as the death knell tolled for the Reich. Very scarce, and the nature of their production as well as the usual extensive handling mean most of the few that exist are in second quality -- those in this sale are in the best condition I've seen. The back is blank, but if you hold it up to the light you can see a racy color picture. This one shows a naked French in the background with a Tommy being berated by her mother n the foreground. Rare, with Pieles BPP photo cert.

Patriotic picture postcard for the Czech Legions in Italy, Russia, and France issued by the American YMCA which served our troops (andCzech alleis) overseas from France to Siberia.
US$35
Patriotic postcard produced *by* and for the Czech Legion in Russia during and shortly after WWI. Excellent unused condition, as per scans. The Legion had great success fighting for the Russians at Zborov, but after the Tsar was deposed and the Communists took over they were to be disarmed, a fate to which they took exception. So, like any of us would do, they decided to take over the Trans-Siberian railway and carved their own rolling iron empire out of the former Russia crown's east. The Allies weakly supported them (mostly with words) in fighting the Communists, but ultimately their revolution sputtered to a halt and they evacuated out of (mostly) Valdivostok. Amazing that in the midst of their fighting they had time to actually produce postcards -- I guess there was some significant downtime while rolling across Siberia.

Original art postcard by member of the Czech Legion in Italy, printed and sold to support/honor the legion. Czechoslovakia was part of Austria at the start of WWI and were obligated to fight on the side of the Entente forces (Germany-Austria-Turkey-Bulgaria) against the allies. However, there was a large national liberation movement, so many Czechs went abroad to fight against the Germans-Austrians with the hope that if they lost, Czechoslovakia would become an independent nation, which is what happened. The Czechs fought for Russia, for the Italians and for the French, among others. Slightly worn, as per scans; genuinely used in the fledgling Czech Republic.

Artistic Czech Legion patriotic postcard from the 1917 Battle of Zborov where the Czech Legion fought valiantly for the Russians against the Central Powers -- note the Czech Lion devouring the Austrian double-headed Eagle. Not long after this the Russian Empire fell and the new Communists tried to subjugate the Czechs, forcing the Czechs on an odyssey across Siberia, ending in Vladivostok. Slightly worn, in very good condition. A scarce card from an almost-forgotten (in the West) battle for a doomed monarchy.
US$69
Patriotic postcard produced by and for the Czech Legion in Russia during and shortly after WWI. The Allies weakly supported them (mostly with words) in fighting the Communists, but ultimately their revolution sputtered to a halt and they evacuated out of (mostly) Vladivostok. Amazing that in the midst of their fighting they had time to actually produce postcards -- I guess there was some significant downtime while rolling across Siberia. Fairly worn, as per scans.

Flieger-Staffel Baustein - Stahlhelm Flugzeug-Spende, andesgruppe Sachsen: right-wing German WWI veterans group in Saxony taking donations for the air force. The Versailles treaty outlawed virtually all powered aircraft production and military air power, so private semi-official groups (the Stahlhem as a whole were big Hitler supporters) tried to raise money to support private development. This was also the reason why gliders (Segelflugzeuge) became so popular. Until Hitler abrogated the Versailles treaty. A rare card.
