CEYLON 1920 Czech Legion Siberia Russia Feldpost
Polni Posta / Feldpost / Field Post cover from member of the Russian Czech Legion, franked with Legion stamp on CEYLON postal stationery. So they tried to disarm them, which didn't turn out so well. The Czech's turned on the faithless Reds and fought their way across Russia and Siberia on the Trans-Siberian Railway until they reached the...

USA 1930 Graf Zeppelin Pan America Spain DOUBLE ROUND TRIP C14 Si64G Variety Cover
Airmail cover flown on the Graf Zeppelin LZ127 airship's Pan America flight from the USA in 1930. Posted on May 1st and paid for the 1st leg to Spain, it dutifully made the trip and got the Seville receiver reverse. But it was not offloaded, and so was forwarded back to the USA, where it received the special handstamp "THIS ARTICLE MADE THE COMPLETE ROUND TRIP VIA GRAF ZEPPELIN". It was again then mistakenly left on board and transported to BACK to Friedrichshafen(!), where it again was forwarded to New York (via steamer -- see note in Michel 3rd ed, p116), and upon arrival it received the Round Trip New York machine cancel dated June 23. Rare, possibly unique. Normal Mi67H (a C14 mistakenly sent on the 1st round trip) CV EUR3000; for this ????

USA 1849 Large Cent Heavy Reverse Crumbling Late Die State
Middle grade 1849 with heavy gouge above the head, but with particularly attractive and interesting die crumbling reverse.

$99.00

1831 USA Large Cent Rare Harpooned Whale Cud
Scudzy coin with rare, so-called 'harpooned-whale' die break on stars 12-13. Almost all of the few known coins (R5) with these large breaks are low grade with problems; in fact, CQR only prices to Fine 12 (in mid four figures). This coin's details would be about VG, but it is quite rough as per scan. Not many opportunities to add one of these to your collection.

$699.00

1847 USA Large Cent Braided Hair N21 VF-XF
Strong VF; a nice even, caramel brown, with smooth surfaces and marks consistent for that grade; some recent hairlines that will fade and a little gunk in the devices. Please examine condition and grade for yourself.

$109.00

USA Large Cent 1849 N3 Variety Massive Die Breaks VF
Strong VF with smooth, even caramel brown surfaces, marks consistent for grade. A little nick under the eye keeps me from calling it choice. The back has the spectacular late-state series of breaks that make this variety so desirable.

$229.00

USA Large Cent 1849 Newcomb N3 Var R3+ Massive Die Breaks F
Strong VF with smooth, even caramel brown surfaces, marks consistent for grade. The back has the spectacular late-state series of breaks that make this variety so desirable.

$149.00

USA 1849 N19 Braided Hair Large Cent R4 Die State B
Smooth, woodgrain brown surfaces, marks consistent for grade. State B with crumbling in wreath under the N and the first S; R4 as a variety, R5 in average.

$75.00

USA 1849 N2 Braided Hair Large Cent Var R2 Massive Die Breaks F
Even, caramel-brown surfaces, marks consistent for grade. The back has the spectacular late-state series of breaks that make this variety so desirable. The photo pulls out a little more golden than the coin exhibits in hand.

$89.00

USA 1848 N20 Braided Hair Large Cent VF R3-
Somewhat dark (scan makes it lighter/redder than it appears in hand). Nice coin -- marks consistent with its grade, but keep it from being choice in my book.

$79.00

USA 1849 VF N11 Braided Hair Large Cent Early Die State
Smooth brown surfaces with some crud (removable, I believe) in the devices and the usual number of circulation marks for its circulated grade -- but too many for choice, for sure. Notable for the early die state. Has the distinct file marks behind star 5, but none of the usual die breaks / rim cuds. An interesting very early example for the progressive die state collector.

$79.00

USA 1849 N2 Braided Hair Large Cent Middle Die Breaks State
Smooth brown surfaces some (removable, I believe) crud in the devices and the usual number of circulation marks for its circulated grade - only the rim bumps are slightly distracting. Notable for the middle die state (Grellman 'm', I would say just before the break under the ME in America) with some of the die breaks reverse -- starting to fill in the 'N' in One, tying the C in CENT to the wreath, crumblung around some fo the berries, etc. An interesting example for the progressive die state collector.

$69.00

USA 1846 N17c Braided Hair Large Cent Choice Coin
Terminal die state 'c' with all listed cracks from 'meri' and 'ate'. Very choice, minimal contact marks, super surfaces. Rarity-4 as a variety, R6 in this condition. I've seen slabbed MS coins not nearly as nice.

$949.00

USA 1846 N18a Braided Hair Large Cent AU Late Date
Smooth and attractive save one spot and rim ding reverse. Slightly brassy, perhaps from an ancient cleaning. Very attractive as you can see from the scans.

$199.00

USA 1804 C6 Spiked Chin Half Cent Die Breaks Manley Very Rare Terminal Die State XII
From my personal collection of 1804 C6's put together in the late 80's and early 90's -- I tried to by every one I found at the time that was anywhere near my budget, because I liked the progression of heavy die breaks and rim crumbling. Smooth hard surfaces and contact marks consistent with it's upper-middle class grade. Manley listed 'Very Rare' terminal die state, with the retained cud above the 'O' in OF. EAC Member #3429 (mid 1980s)

$799.00

USA 1804 Spiked Chin C6 Half Cent Die Breaks Manley Rare Die State III
From my personal collection of 1804 C6's put together in the late 80's and early 90's -- I tried to by every one I found at the time that was anywhere near my budget, because I liked the progression of heavy die breaks and rim crumbling. Dark choclate with clean hard surfaces. Braig 1.9, in betwen the 'Very Scarce' and 'Rare' Manley listed early die states 2.5-3, with the heavy legend cracks extending from M and CA of AMERICA to the rim, but no actual cud above the M. Rare. EAC Member #3429 (mid 1980s)

$429.00

USA 1804 C6 Spiked Chin Half Cent Die Breaks Manley Rare Die State II
From my personal collection of 1804 C6's put together in the late 80's and early 90's -- I tried to by every one I found at the time that was anywhere near my budget, because I liked the progression of heavy die breaks and rim crumbling. Medium chocolate, somewhat dirty, pinpricks here and there, normal contact marks for its grade. Braig / Manley 1.0 or perhaps earlier, as there is no crack from the top of the U to the rim. EAC Member #3429 (mid 1980s)

$189.00

USA 1804 C6 Spiked Chin Half Cent Die Breaks Rare Manley Die State V-ish
From my personal collection of 1804 C6's put together in the late 80's and early 90's -- I tried to by every one I found at the time that was anywhere near my budget, because I liked the progression of heavy die breaks and rim crumbling. More of a medium chocolate in person with smooth hard surfaces. Braig 2.9, Manley 4.5-5, with the full die break over ME but the chip isn't out above the C yet -- it's still just a light crack.

$249.00

USA 1804 C6 Spiked Chin Half Cent Die Breaks Manley Die State I
From my personal collection of 1804 C6's put together in the late 80's and early 90's -- I tried to by every one I found at the time that was anywhere near my budget, because I liked the progression of heavy die breaks and rim crumbling. More of a medium chocolate in person with mostly smooth surfaces -- a little dirt and some scattering of pin-pricks. Earliest die state I've seen with most of the mentioned cracks barely discernible. From McCawley Grellmann Auction #6, and comes with that lot card. EAC Member #3429 (mid 1980s)

$249.00

USA 1804 C6 Spiked Chin Half Cent Die Breaks Manley Die State VIII
From my personal collection of 1804 C6's put together in the late 80's and early 90's -- I tried to by every one I found at the time that was anywhere near my budget, because I liked the progression of heavy die breaks and rim crumbling. A bit darker in person, with some crud in the devices and light hairlines and pin scratches which are much more prominent in the scan than in hand. Scarce intermediate die state, with complete cud above UN but night yet at A in AMERICA.

$249.00

USA 1804 C6 Spiked Chin Half Cent Die Breaks Manley Die State IX
From my personal collection of 1804 C6's put together in the late 80's and early 90's -- I tried to by every one I found at the time that was anywhere near my budget, because I liked the progression of heavy die breaks and rim crumbling. Medium chocolate with glassy highlights, a little crud in the devices, normal amount of contact marks. Scarce intermediate die state with the cud above A in AMERICA to F in OF, but no sinking yet above the I in UNITED.

$249.00

USA 1828 Large Cent N4 Very Scarce Variety
Very scarce 1828 Newcomb-4 Large Cent -- this is actually a relatively high grade for this variety, since the CC stretches down to VF -- most of these are poor condition G-VG's. Decent surfaces, mostly smooth and hard with a scattering of verdigris - improvable. The normal amount of contact marks and hairlines for the grade.

$1399.00

USA 1828 N10 Small Date Coronet Large Cent Barest Trace of Use Scarce Variety
1828 Small Date large cent with only the barest trace of rub on the high points -- a bit of blush on the cheek and the highest leaf centers reverse. Good hard surfaces with a little crud in the devices and few pinpricks. A really nice coin for the variety, near choice.

$2899.00

USA 1831 N1 Coronet Large Cent Choice Brown
1831 Large Letters Large Cent. Smooth surfaces, choice condition. It's hard to get a good picture through the scuffed plastic, but it's a nice coin in a very high condition (for a coronet cent).

$1099.00

USA 1838 N15 Coronet Large Cent Rare Condition
Rare Newcomb 15 1838 large cent in high condition (for the variety). Smooth surfaces with heavy flow lines from the late use of the die. Some rim dings and a few more contact marks on the obverse than I'd hope for in a high grade coin, so it will net a few points lower than it's sharpness grade, which I'd think would still put it comfortably in the condition census, since the CC stretches down to fine(!) last I checked.

$4999.00

USA 1835 N18 Coronet Large Cent Rare Variety
Rare Newcomb 18 large cent variety which unfortunately got caught in a knife fight. You should see the other guy. An average lower grade coin (except for those beauty marks) made exceptional in the scarcity of the variety -- while this isn't in the census, of course, the top coin known is only a VF.

$499.00

USA 1835 N12 Coronet Large Cent Scarcer Variety
Slightly rough surfaces, as per scans. Just a low grade example of a scarce Newcomb variety.

$129.00

USA 1835 N2 Large Cent Scarcer Variety
Well worn and lots of contact marks; just a low grade example of a somewhat scarcer Newcomb variety.

$35.00

1848 N21c Choice Red Brown MS USA Large Cent Unc Die Cracks State C
Choice red and brown 1848 large cent , N21 variety in die state 'c' with cracks, crumbling in the E of CENT but none in the R of AMERICA. The very fine die crack from the hair across the high point of the neck is distinct. A beautiful piece, formerly R4 but lower grade pieces have brought the rarity down to R3-. Still R5 in choice, and only 12 total listed in the CQR condition census in any uncirculated grade.

$1199.00

1849 N-30 USA Large Cent Last Variety of 1849 R5 XF Details
Very scarce 1849 variety, R5+ in below average, R6 in average condition. This must have been cleaned at sometime in the past and since retoned; strangely mottled, which I actually find oddly attractive but your mileage may vary. Some roughness/crud in the devices, but otherwise deeply impressed with hard surfaces. A tough coin -- the CQR listings are sparse with upper VFs in the four figures and then no more listed until AU; what this nets to is up to the grader, but it certainly has XF details. Crisp lines up from nape of neck curls up to bun, dash below star 13, and lines behind UNIT but no crumbling in N of ONE.

$899.00

USA 1829 N7 Large Cent Wheelspoke Reverse Die Variety High Grade Details
Very good variety, the so-called 'Wheelspoke' reverse with the radiating die cracks (esp4cially visible between D and S, at 2nd T of STATES, 1st A of AMERICA. This example is in the final state of the reverse, with all of the cracks. Very scarce in any kind of decent grade, though this one has uniform porosity. Still, it's free from any significant marks and has a nice color with XF detail; since a nice XF would run you $3k (if you could find one) and the range of die states make this especially scarce (people such as my myself hold more than one!) this isn't a bad bargain for the die state collector.

$129.00

USA 1831 N5 R4 Coronet Large Cent Scarce Variety
Scarce variety, medium (or small) letters, depending on your nomenclature. Wear and circulation marks consistent with grade, nice chocolate brown surfaces.

$109.00

USA 1828 N12 Braided Hair Large Cent Rare In this Condition
Clear die crack at lower reverse connecting CA of AMERICA to the wreath. The 1812 N12 used to be much rarer, but a lot of low grade coins of been cherrypicked in the last couple of decades, leaving this an R3+ coin; however, almost no high grade examples exist, with condition census coins reaching down to VF. Nice color, good surfaces, some crud in the devices (very improvable, but I haven't the time or patience) and with contact marks consistent with its grade. Nice woodgrain toning reverse.

$1299.00

USA 1848 N20 Braided Hair Large Cent Choice AU Nice Color R3-
Choice medium brown (a bit deeper than the scan), smooth surfaces, some underlying mottled tones. Marks at the lower end of consistent with grade, a few spots of reverse. Really attractive coin, and a bit tougher variety, R3- as a variety and R5 in above average (which this one is, IMO). Definitely seen slabbed MS coins with more wear than this one.

$299.00

USA 1846 N26 Braided Hair Large Cent Tall Date R5
Light-medium brown (a bit deeper than the scan), smooth surfaces, marks consistent with grade (please see scan). A scarce coin; finest known is a 45, rest of CC is composed of VFs (not that this one grades that high).
