Original German Empire "Deutscher Rundflug" / "German Round Flight" prize competition postcard, a (much) earlier forerunner of the X-Prize. In this case, there was 400,000 marks at stakes for heavier-than-air vehicles that could make the official list of flights around Germany (the list of the flight legs is on the back of the card). Original German Empire Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) of flight pioneer Lt Jahnow in his airplane, on official Rundflug Berliner Zeitung Preis / The Berlin Newspaper Prize for Berlin Flights at Johannisthal, with BZ cachet reverse. The Berliner Zeitung was instrumental in early European flight, sponsoring yearly prizes (much like our modern X-Prize) for different flight feats. Lt Reinhold Jahnow is (unfortunately) noted for being the first German airman casualty in active service (as per Guinness).
